  • In general there 5 kinds of races in Maine.

    • High school races: run by schools/clubs that are only open to skiers from teams/clubs

    • Middle school races: similar to high school races for younger skiers

    • Bill Koch League races: these are offshoots of the NENSA organized Bill Koch Youth Ski League and are aimed at the youngest skiers (typically up to about age 12). BKL is sometimes just used as shorthand for a youth race, even it’s not a NENSA race

    • Eastern Cup Races: run by New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) and aimed at higher level skiers from high school to masters

    • Community races: run by clubs, trail networks, etc. and are meant to fun, community races for all skill levels. Often have varied divisions, age groups, and distances to fit all skiers

    There are also biathalon races, but these are more specialized and run by fewer clubs/organizations
